Safety Sessions - the challenge of saving lives

Early in the new millennium, the U.S.
roadway systems’ incident trends plateaued
at a fatality rate that was the lowest
in history. Consequently, the number
of annual roadway fatalities remained
virtually unchanged for many years. Then
many states experienced upward trends.
In reaction to these alarming trends,
SAFETEA-LU recognized the need for all
transportation safety partners to focus their
activities and resources on strategically
identified traffic safety problems. In concert
with FHWA, states have created Strategic
Highway Safety Plans (SHSPs) that focus on
reducing fatalities and serious injuries in the
areas identified through their development
processes. This session focuses on SHSP
implementation and best practices in
reducing traffic fatalities.
